Project Proposal
(i) Identification & Exploration of the Need
The MDP is to be a desk lamp that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
As stated, the project when completed will serve as a desk lamp/light for me, the creator. The product itself is intended to last for a considerable amount of time (2-3 years), it also has to be accessible to the changing of the globe. I plan to use it as a functional night lamp, to provide some form of light at night, and to hold miscellaneous scraps of paper and things.
In the hypothetical case where the project could be a commercial proposition, the intended audience would be targeted to all age ranges, from 3-100 , as I intend it to be interesting, intuitive and fun to look and interact with, as well as serving the practical part of the design.

(ii) Area of Investigation
Criteria (Areas to be considered and parameters)
In this project, there are a variety of materials that are available for our use: metal (aluminium, sheet metal, steel etc.), wood (timber, plywood etc.), acrylic and cloth (textiles). Whilst the main application of this project is to serve as a source of light, there are also a variety of other functions that can be incorporated with the design, such as storage, a shelf, a stand.
Criteria (Areas to be considered and parameters)
- The project must not exceed 400mm in height
- The maximum width and depth 300mm x 300mm
- The project must be reasonably easy to carry and portable - and therefore be made of lightweight materials and be reasonably compact.
- It must also be made of reasonably cheap materials
- The project must also be safe and sturdy, as it has to last a very curious five year old child for some years. This therefore means, no sharp exposed corners, no detachable small pieces, which may be ingested and caused choking.
- It must be aesthetically pleasing: creative, interesting, intuitive, fun.
- It should have more than the one use of a light.

(iii) Criteria to Evaluate Success
In order for the final product to be successful, it must fulfill its primary function, serve as a light source. Even though it doesn't necessarily have to be a direct light, it should at least illuminate a room to a certain degree. This means that the circuit should be properly joined together. The final product should also be well made, meaning that it can be supported on its own and it isn't in shambles. It should also be aesthetically pleasing, a creative design that will catch people's eyes and please myself as well, as the product is meant for me. And lastly it should fulfill all, if not most, of the criteria stated.
The most important criteria for this project to be successful is to be fulfill the primary function as a light. Next, the aesthetics, creativity and final product of the design. Finally would be the fulfillment of the parameters and criteria.
In order to determine whether the project is a success, I shall ask my peers and friends what they think about my final design in three criteria: Practicability, Creativity, In general. Also the product shall be marked as success or not by the teachers opinion and mark.
